On the South Shore at the juncture of Chilmark and Aquinnah is a stretch of secluded, private beach the likes of which you won’t find anywhere else on the island. There are great big rolling dunes, more like you’d expect to see on the outer Cape rather than on the Vineyard. This photo was taken on a winter walk with friends in 1980. I love the sense of mystery of the footprints going up the otherwise pristine dune and disappearing around the bend. The footprints humanize the photo and make you feel more like a participant than an observer in this photo.
